Martin Civil Construction were engaged through GSL to undertake the installation of a stormwater box culvert in a high-water table area of Quaifes Road Halswell.

Martin Civil Construction undertook

    • Service location and survey of buried services prior to excavation
    • Diversion of a stream/fish bypass across Quaifes road
    • Excavation of trench to 3.5 m deep and 5m wide
    • Installation of 4m, 8m and 9m sheet piles across Quaifes road and in the live stream
    • De-watering
    • Installation of Box Culvert units across Quaifes road, total of 22m in length
    • Installation of 4 wingwall and 2 headwalls
    • Backfilling

Key challenges

    • Overhead lines and services – minimum approach distances required request for a permit
    • Installation of sheet piles in a live stream requiring high level of environmental awareness
    • Installation of sheet piles into and through underground tree stumps
    • Keeping water out of site – Martin Civil put together a methodology for maintaining existing flows, storm water flows and fish passage accepted by the Client and CCC
    • Silt and sediment control
    • Pedestrians going through site – driving through site – requiring a close working relationship with GSL to work together to flag pedestrians early and warn them of site activity
